Mill Creek Road July 8, 2008

We started this trip from the Mill Creek road. We had to stop short of the PCT trail junction due to a creek across the road. We parked just before the creek and walked across. This trip was supposed to be to Lake Josephine. However, there was more snow where the trail intersected the road than I had expected. I knew that a lot of the hikers were not comfortable hiking in the snow. So, I elected to continue up the road since I knew it followed the powerlines all the way to the top. We had to cross patches of snow here and there, but it was all pretty easy going. Some of the gals stopped short of the last snow patch because it had a steep slope and they were afraid of sliding. A few of the braver souls followed me across the snow up to a small lake on the other side. Alas, it was still partly frozen and I didn't see any fish. So, no fishing for me this trip. Oh well, I knew there would still be some snow, but I wasn't expecting that much snow. The hiking season is going to be so late this year!

The Unknown Lake
There are a lot of these unnamed lakes up around this area. If it has a name, none of us knew it. (Picture curtesy of Kirsten Sweet.)

Crossing the Snowbank
I couldn't take pictures of everyone crossing over to the lake since I was leading the pack cutting trail. Instead, I took pictures of them crossing back to where the rest of the gang were eating lunch. I just missed catching Theresa as she slid down the snow. It scared some of the gals, but I knew she couldn't really get hurt on that bank. The snow was soft and it didn't go down very far. She slid down, slow motion, in an upright position until she stopped herself on the rocks. She looked like she had done it on purpose. She could have done the cat trick (I meant to do that) and I would have believed her. :-)
